Josiah Goodwin diaries and research collection, 1862-1864, 1983-1984.

The collection consists of two handwritten diaries of Josiah H. Goodwin kept during his service in the Mississippi Marine Brigade from January 1, 1863 to June 2, 1864. He writes about his service aboard various U.S. steamers along the river in Louisiana and Mississippi, and discusses the Vicksburg Campaign of 1863 and the Red River Expedition of 1864. Describing raids near Vicksburg, Goodwin details the suffering of the locals as Northern forces swept through the city. Other topics he covers include soldier animosity toward the officers, suspicion of army doctors, and the interplay between white Union regiments and those of the United States Colored Troops. He also provides a look at the day to day life of a sailor and his impressions of the people and wildlife of the lower Mississippi Valley. Also included in the collection are the research materials of William Wiseley, Ph.D., compiled while studying the diaries.
